Jordi Savall, viola da gamba Rolf Lislevand, theorbo Pierre Hantai, harpsichord
Note:
The works of Marin Marais mark both the apogee and the end-point of the great French repertoire for the bass viol. By the time of his death in 1728, the violin and the cello had already replaced it as the favoured instruments for string chamber music, positions they have retained ever since. Catalan master Jordi Savall, whose memorable playing on the soundtrack of the 1991 film Tous les matins du monde helped raise modern-day awareness of the bass viol and its music, performs works by Marais, as well as by his teacher Sainte-Colombe and his contemporary François Couperin, revealing both the viol’s exquisite expressive eloquence and its dashing virtuosity.
This event is part of the York Early Music Festival.
