Note: John Bull and Peter Philips were not only leading representatives of the great school of keyboard composers which included Byrd, Gibbons and Farnaby; as Catholic exiles in the Low Countries they also helped spread the influence of the English virginalists into northern Europe, thereby feeding a tradition that peaked with Bach.
