How Shall We Sing The Lord’s Song in a Strange Land?
Performers:
Emma Kirkby, soprano Peter Harvey, bass London Baroque
Note:
By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. The opening lines of Psalm 137 are among the most famous in that great collection of Hebrew poems, singing eloquently of the oppression of the Jews exiled to Babylon in the 7th century BC. In 17th century Germany it seems to have spoken with special power, inspiring settings of great beauty and nobility from the likes of Schütz, Scheidt, Schein and Tunder. They are heard here alongside similarly affecting works by Weckmann, Rosenmüller and Dowland. This event is part of the York Early Music Festival.
