The Lawson Trio was formed in Cambridge in 2000 by three leading members of the University Instrumental Award scheme. Since then the ensemble has flourished, going on to hold a Leverhulme Chamber Music Junior Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and maintaining a busy recital schedule. The Lawson Trio gives frequent performances for music societies nationwide throughout the year, and has appeared for numerous festivals, including Cambridge, Chester, and the Lake District Summer Music Festivals. Peformances abroad include those at Kuhmo International Chamber Music Festival in Finland, as winners of the ACE Study Tours Scholarship, where the trio was awarded the Kees Wiebenga Diploma for best chamber music performance. They made their television debut in the same year, on Howard Goodall's 20th Century Greats. Highlights of 2006 include a recital for Chichester Festivities, and a return to Cambridge to perform Messiaen's Quatour pour la fin du temps with clarinettist Timothy Orpen in King's Chapel, as part of Easter at King's festival.
In 2006, the trio was invited to study extensively with the Florestan Trio, both in their London masterclass series and also in Aldeburgh, having been awarded a full scholarship by the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme. Prior to this, the Lawson Trio has studied with such eminent musicians as Michael Dussek, the Endellion, Chilingirian and Fitzwilliam Quartets, Trio Ondine, Christopher Rowland, Valentin Berlinsky, Konstantin Bogino, Sigmund Nissel, Ian Brown, Andrew West, and Douglas Boyd.
Keen to explore unusual and themed programmes, the Lawson Trio includes a wide selection of contemporary and lesser-known works in its portfolio, alongside the more familiar masterworks of the piano trio genre. Their repertoire also incorporates a range of popular classics, more suitable for informal and children's concerts and workshops. In early 2006, the Lawson Trio was delighted to be offered the opportunity to work alongside the Schubert Ensemble of London in promoting Chamber Music 2000, a contemporary music project which will see the trio giving workshops of especially commissioned works, by many of the country's leading composers, in schools and colleges around the country. Please watch this space or visit www.chambermusic2000.com now for more information.
Lunch time concerts are held at 12.30 pm on alternate Thursdays from September to the beginning of July (details are included below). There will be a retiring collection to help cover the expenses. Snacks are available from 11.45 am. |
