Tugan Sokhiev, conductor

3:Symphony No 5 in E minor, Op 64
Note: By 1885, when Tchaikovsky was composing his Fifth Symphony, his reputation was established and his music was even being performed in the USA. But emotionally Tchaikovsky was still not strong, and he pronounced himself in a torment of discontent with the symphony, convinced that it was not his best work. Audiences since have disagreed with him: highly charged and often tragic in feel, it is one of his richest and most profound compositions. Tonight it is paired with two equally dramatic works: Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto and Berlioz’s Overture, Le corsaire.
