| Note: | |
Strauss tore open the family curtains in the Symphonia domestica, and for some, just like his impish creation Till Eulenspiegel, he didn’t come out of it seeming too smart. Never mind the grand title, this charming five-movement symphony was a literal portrait of Strauss at home with wife and baby – with kitchen quarrels and romantic moments upstairs thrown in. It’s a captivating celebration of the everyday, in music of Straussian gravitas, lyricism and ardour. After all, what, as Strauss challenged his critics, can be more serious than married life?
