When: Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 19:30
Where: Royal Festival Hall, London
Performers: London Philharmonic Orchestra
Christoph Eschenbach, conductor
Daniel Müller-Schott, cello
Programme :Antonín Dvorák
1:Cello Concerto in A
 Johannes Brahms
2:Symphony No 1 in C minor, Op 68
Note: Why on earth didn’t I know that one could write a cello concerto like this? If I had only known, I would have written one long ago. So wrote Brahms of his colleague Dvorák’s concerto for the cello as he perused a score brimming with melodic invention, effortless beauty and warmth of character. As for Brahms, the insistent, compelling discipline of his First Symphony affected Dvorák and many others deeply, its opening bars launching mid-sentence, pushing outwards and inwards, grim, tense and utterly compelling. Make no mistake, Brahms the symphonist had arrived.
