 Felix Mendelssohn
3:String Quartet No 6 in F minor, Op 80
Note: Haydn was a unique master of musical language, its grammar and syntax. Part of that mastery is wit and humour, and the ability, like the very best of comic actors, to time a joke. Even if you already know the Joke his compositional skill will compel you to laugh. Shostakovich’s eighth quartet, written after he had visited Dresden in July 1960, expresses deeply felt emotions, quoting from a revolutionary Russian song as well as containing a number of autobiographical quotations from a range of works including the opera Katerina Ismailova. Mendelssohn too was in a state of deep despair when he composed his Quartet in F minor, Op 80. His beloved sister Fanny had died suddenly and unexpectedly; his own death was to follow just two months later.
