Note: After Mendelssohn’s superb musical picture of the surging sea around Fingal’s Cave, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is the supreme masterpiece of the form, building from the simplest of openings to a beautifully balanced and satisfying work.

Mendelssohn’s fourth symphony is like a journal of the excited young composer’s first impressions of Italy, in which the overall feeling is one of sheer exhilaration.
