Note: The brilliant violinist Rachel Podger, loved by audiences for her warmth, insight and technical prowess leads this concert. Bach's joyous solo cantata Jauchzet Gott (praise God) lies at the heart of the evening and indeed there are other links to Bach's music here. He was, for instance, an admirer of the otherwise little known composer Jan Zelenka. And the work of another composer, Telemann's Tafelmusik, has sometimes been compared as a collection of music to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, despite its humble origins, tafelmusick (table music) originally being music to accompany a banquet or feast.
