Note: City Organist Dr Simon Lindley puts the mighty Town Hall instrument through its paces in a special concert celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Leeds Town Hall. Music is entirely from the pens of composers especially associated with the building – Henry Smart and first City Organist Dr William Spark (who were responsible for the design of the organ), Dr Samuel Sebastian Wesley, first Organist of Leeds Parish Church and Dr H A Fricker, who succeeded Dr Spark as City Organist in 1898 after the death of the older man a year previous. Dr Fricker held the civic post until emigration to Canada in 1917. Thereafter, the position fell into desuetude, being revived with the appointment of Dr Donald Hunt when the instrument was restored and re-opened in 1972; Dr Lindley succeeded Dr Hunt in January of 1976 and, like him, holds the post in tandem with that at Leeds Parish Church.
