Note: Laura Samuel (Violin) is a member of the award-winning Belcea Quartet, who are currently appearing at the Edinburgh Festival. The Belcea Quartet, who record extensively for EMI Classics, have just garnered much critical praise for their recording of Bartok’s String Quartets. Laura Samuel herself has won many prizes, including the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund Manoug Parikian award, Royal Overseas’ League String Section and the Tunbridge Wells International Artists Competition, which resulted in a South Bank Recital. She made her Concerto debut with the Mendelssohn at Fairfield Halls, Croydon, and has most recently performed as a soloist with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Trondheim Soloists.

31-year-old Nicholas Jenkins (conductor) has recently conducted Offenbach L’Ile de Tulipatan and Weill Der Jasager for Opéra de Lyon, Mozart Così fan tutte for Opéra-Théâtre de Besançon, and Mozart Idomeneo and Dove Tobias and the Angel for New Sussex Opera. He regularly works as assistant conductor to Marc Minkowski at Opera National de Paris, Théâtre du Châtelet - Paris, Théâtre de la Monnaie - Brussels, Opéra de Lyon, and the festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Bremen and Salzburg.

A Kent-based professional orchestra, Kent Sinfonia has members who either live in Kent or who have strong links around the county – many also play with major London orchestras and throughout the UK. Established in 1962 by Béela de Csilléry, then County Music advisor, the orchestra gained full professional status in 1995. A registered charity and one of the foremost orchestras in the South East, its aim is to take music to all. Central to this is its extended educational programme devoted to the next generation of concert goers. Kent Sinfonia is one the the cultural partners in Kent County Council’s project Find your talent, starting September 2008, working with schools in the Shepway area and extending to other areas of East Kent.

The Lark Ascending is featured in the concert as part of the 2008 commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the death of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958).
