Come early at 6.30pm for a special half-hour free pre-concert event. Royal Academy of Music Manson Ensemble, conductor Franck Ollu.
Two composers closely associated with BCMG, Oliver Knussen and Julian Anderson, provide a programme of colour and vitality, and of striking sonic images. We hear Knussen’s exhilarating Coursing and his typically poetic Songs without Voices. From Anderson come two of the extraordinary pieces with which he bounded onto the scene, bold imaginary landscapes whose references are Russian (Khorovod) and Spanish-Moorish (Alhambra Fantasy). Extending the Iberian theme, the concert also includes a vivid astrological invention by Roberto Gerhard, the Catalan composer whose studies with Schoenberg only heightened his music’s temperature.
BCMG is one of the world’s leading classical new music ensembles and was formed by players from the CBSO. The group is devoted to the performance of new music and has commissioned and performed over 100 world premieres of new works by today’s leading composers.
