The Mid-Somerset Orchestra’s winter concert in its 2008-9 season is a very special and varied programme which should give all kinds of pleasure. Weber’s sparkling 2nd Clarinet Concerto was commissioned by King Maximilian I of Bavaria and first performed by Weber’s friend, Heinrich Barmann. The MSO welcomes Joe Shiner, young virtuoso from Wells, as soloist in the concerto. The orchestra also welcomes Martin Pring, Bristol-based composer, violinist and conductor, to conduct the programme starting with Stravinsky’s Danses Concertantes, conceived as an abstract ballet many years after the composer had established his reputation as a ballet composer in Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring. The concert will close with Delius Two Aquarelles arranged by Eric Fenby for strings and Haydn’s 53rd Symphony L'Impériale, one of the many that Haydn wrote for his patrons, the Ezterhazy family. |
