| Note: | |
The rapturous applause that greets most of their concerts provides overwhelming evidence that the Elias has arrived, seen and ultimately conquered. - Sheffield Telegraph.
The Elias continues its ongoing series of Kurtág’s intense quartets and Mendelssohn’s celebrated Op 44 quartets, opening with the concise and contrasting 12 Microludes. Beethoven’s Op 18 quartets were his most ambitious set of works to date, and the sixth’s last movement, entitled La Malincolia, gives a taste of the composer’s later music. Quadrants, by composer and close friend of the Quartet, Ivan Mosely, is a short and edgy work that gives each instrument equal prominence. Concluding the concert is Mendelssohn’s Op 44, No 3. Its finale has a tense and fiery character and places thrilling virtuosic demands on the first violin. |
